The TSMC factory was hit by a power failure

The outage around yesterday noon affected the Fab 14B-P7 factory in Nanjing (Taiwan), which specializes in the production of chips using new production technologies (works with 300mm wafers and, according to WCCFtech, processes of 12 nanometers and newer). The failure of the cable resulted in a voltage drop in the entire area, which with the help of diesel generators and temporary wiring could not be compensated until 18:23 in the evening. The final repair is to be completed this afternoon.

According to UDN, according to preliminary reports, 30,000 wafers worth a total of almost one billion yuan were to be damaged. However, it will be better to wait for these numbers to be specified, as the number of wafers should correspond to almost three weeks of factory production. Thus, the entire work in progress would have to be damaged or contaminated, not just the amount corresponding to the daily production.

The Deji Dam supplying the provincial city of Taichung is empty

In the current situation, where TSMC is facing water shortages, lack of substrates, lack of staff and ever-increasing demands from customers, daily outages are a very unpleasant affair. Of the 30,000 7nm wafers, for example, over 21 million Ryzen 7 5800X processors could be produced, or 3 million Rade 68X XT Radeons, or 3.7 million SoCs for the Xbox Series X. Even if it were confirmed that the number of damaged wafers was lower, it would still be a very noticeable loss. However, it is not known for which customers the factory currently produced.
