Those of you who have heard of Final Fantasy and are familiar with this JRPG game, of course, have heard of the myths full of emotion and drama that always surround it. That the name “Final Fantasy” was chosen by Squaresoft because this last product is their final fantasy, a product that will determine whether their career as a developer will end up bankrupt if it fails or survives. Even the success of the first Final Fantasy series is often considered as a stepping stone that has made Squaresoft successful in surviving, to the point of being successful as we know it so far. Turns out oh it turns out, all these things are just a myth.
The truth came straight out of the mouth of the “father” of Final Fantasy – Hironobu Sakaguchi in his panel session for Final Fantasy’s 35th anniversary as a franchise. Sakaguchi mentioned that the game’s initial name was actually Fighting Fantasy which was later shortened to “FF”. But when they found out that the name Fighting Fantasy had already become a trademark for another product, they decided to change it to Final Fantasy. As simple as that.

Even so, Sakaguchi also admitted that Squaresoft was also responsible for enlivening this “myth”. He revealed that the myth came from a schoolboy who sent them a postcard. It turns out that the child defines “Final Fantasy” as Squaresoft’s last fantasy game as told by the teacher. As soon as Sakaguchi received it, he immediately felt that this would be the definition and myth they used. Although the teacher’s identity is never known, he is eager to thank his “contribution”.
Final Fantasy itself is now entering its sixteenth series which was just released recently with a big follow-up project – Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as another big title that deserves to be anticipated. What was your reaction when you found out this information?
