TREVISO The coronavirus strikes with ever greater force. Young people too. A 37-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Treviso hospital. They had no health problems. However, Covid-19 has still hit them extremely hard. Their conditions were immediately critical. The virus has impaired respiratory function. And the doctors were forced to open the doors of resuscitation. “The virus has regained strength, is sneaky and does not look anyone in the face – warns Francesco Benazzi, general manager of the USL of the Marca – also in light of the hospitalization in intensive care of young people, who had no other pathologies, I address in particular to the boys: it is a very difficult time, we ask you to help and help us always wearing a mask and avoiding crowds. Nobody is immune: everyone can be infected, and infect others ».
WORRYING NUMBERS
The epidemic does not stop. Only yesterday another 694 infections emerged in the Marca. It’s the highest number ever. The total number of Treviso people who are fighting against the infection travels towards 10 thousand: it is exactly 9,443. And unfortunately in the last 24 hours there have been 4 eighty-year-olds missing, already affected by other serious diseases. The dead in Israel have risen to 5. To date there are 260 hospitalized in all: 18 are under fifty and 81 do not reach seventy. There is already the orange alert for ordinary wards. At the moment 242 people are hospitalized here. At 308 the red alert goes off. The USL has activated a plan with over 600 beds. You can get to 771. After that you risk a general short circuit. Attention is also very high in intensive care. There are 18 patients in intensive care: 12 in Treviso, including the two young people, 5 in Conegliano and 1 in Montebelluna. Only one is missing to trigger the yellow alert. In the storm of March, to give an idea, there had been 49 hospitalizations in intensive care. There are currently no intubated people. But 22 patients are in critical condition. You can’t let your guard down. «We already have another 50 equipped intensive care beds. And we can go up to 116 – says Benazzi – we want to give the Treviso people the certainty that the Local Health Authority, the Venetian healthcare system and the whole Region are ready. By following the rules, however, we have the option of not going to occupy these posts. We are ready, but let’s not try our luck ». «The Veneto has been included in the yellow band. Now it depends on the behavior of each of us – he adds – the health system is already under stress. If the contagion progresses, things get even more complicated. Not to mention that moving into the orange band would mean closing and bringing the economy to its knees. We follow the basic measures: mask, distancing and hand washing, without giving rise to gatherings ».
THE SCHOOLS
The fact that the coronavirus does not differentiate between young and old is confirmed by the results of checks in schools. Up to now, over 49,000 swabs have been performed in institutions. And 1,339 children were infected with Covid (more than 2.7%). Cases are currently recorded in 253 classrooms: 94 are in quarantine and 159 in self-monitoring. What is the difference? The quarantine of an entire section is triggered when at least two positives are found in the same group. Self-monitoring, on the other hand, when there is the infection of a single student and all his classmates are negative. «At school correct behaviors are maintained – Benazzi specifies – the important thing is that the children continue to respect them even when they go out. First of all wearing the mask. It is the only way to safeguard yourself ».
REST HOMES
As a further confirmation that the virus stops at nothing, there is an increase in infections even in retirement homes. To date, 160 elderly people are affected by the virus (out of a total of 5,574 tested). Among them, 25 are hospitalized. Since the end of February 161 deaths have been counted in the Treviso facilities. Among the operators, below, there are 103 positives (out of 5,267). The coronavirus entered a total of 33 out of 54 retirement homes. The largest outbreaks concern three structures: Villa Belvedere in Crocetta del Montello (68 positive elderly out of 126 and 22 out of 128 operators); Salce dell’Israa house hotel in Treviso (where the number of positive elderly people fell from 38 to 29 and where unfortunately 5 deaths were counted); the Povegliano branch of Casa Marani (16 positive elderly out of 22 and 4 operators).
