The Transfer of ATACMS Missiles: Concerns and Consequences of US-Ukraine-Russia Relations

“The United States, despite deep concern and strong opposition from the international community, nevertheless supplied Ukraine with the ATACMS surface-to-surface missile system,” North Korean Ambassador to Russia Shin Hong Chol said in a statement.

At the same time, he stated that supposedly “any strike on the internal regions of Russia will not contribute to a speedy end to the Ukrainian situation or its peaceful resolution, which is what the United States stands for.”

“(A strike against Russia – ed.) will serve as a catalyst for drawing all of Europe into the crucible of an endless war and its prolongation,” said the DPRK ambassador.

Transfer of ammunition to Russia by North Korea

On September 13, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin met in Russia to discuss military cooperation. Before this, Western media reported about the DPRK’s intentions to transfer artillery stocks and weapons to Russia in exchange for technology.

At the same time, the Economist claims that Pyongyang has been supplying Moscow with artillery ammunition and Katyusha-type missiles for most of the year.

ATACMS for Ukraine

This week, Ukrainian defenders launched missile attacks on airfields in temporarily occupied Lugansk and Berdyansk.

The Wall Street Journal later reported that the Defense Forces used long-range American ATACMS missiles for the attack. This information was confirmed by President Vladimir Zelensky.

According to media reports, a total of 20 such missiles were transferred to Ukraine. But, as Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba noted, ATACMS deliveries will occur on an ongoing basis.
