The Toyota Supra received a manual transmission

Many Toyota fans could not forgive themselves for offering an exclusively automatic transmission to the new supra. That has changed now – the supra has been given a manual for the six-cylinder, not the four-cylinder like its sister BMW Z4.

However, the change from automatic to manual was not just about reaching the BMW transmission warehouse and installing it. It needed to be tuned directly for the engine and car, it also got a clutch with a larger diameter and a stronger compression spring.

From the outside, it looks like a normal supra.

Although manual, this transmission also has control electronics, which, however, do not control the transmission itself as much as the things around it. This is, for example, the behavior of the engine when the clutch pedal is depressed or understeer.

Toyota uses the designation “iMT” in connection with the transmission, which could mean automatic downshifts as in Yaris Crosshowever incomparable this crossover is to the super. He also writes that in Sport mode it is possible to “turn off the default settings”, but we do not find an explicit mention of automatic intermediate gases in the press release.

However, we learn that the final gear ratio has been reduced from 3.15 to 3.46 compared to the eight-speed automatic, so that the car is more agile when starting or accelerating acceleration. And also that the suspension and steering have undergone minor modifications in connection with the installation of a manual transmission.

The developers have also fine-tuned the traction control system for smoother starts in situations where one rear wheel has significantly lower traction than the other, and added a feature called Hairpin +, which allows “a greater difference in wheel slip rates on the left and right.”

Although it seems that something like this goes against the principle of the self-locking differential with which the three-liter supra is equipped, the aim of this system is to improve the experience when riding in mountain serpentines.

Finally, the installation of a manual transmission and the use of new alloy wheels, along with a few other minor modifications, reduced the weight by 21.8 kg compared to the three-liter supercar with an automatic transmission. What is not yet known is the price of manual supry.
