The Toyota Hilux GR Sport II: European Release, Specs, and Features

So now: In January 2023, a German Toyota spokesman denied that this car was coming to Europe. Nine months later, the confirmation from the European headquarters is there: The Toyota Hilux GR Sport II is also coming to us. “Also” because this model debuted on the other side of the world in January, even in the same color scheme as the EU version.

The Australian GR Sport variant of the Toyota Hilux has some quite appetizing details ahead of the previous model of the same name in the series in Germany. Above all, the engine power of the four-cylinder turbodiesel with a displacement of 2.8 liters. This was increased by ten percent, the result is 224 hp. The torque of the Australian version of the Hilux GR Sport is 550 Newton meters, 50 Nm more than the standard model.

No additional power for the turbodiesel

However, German Hilux fans will now sigh, this is not the case with the version for Europe. Here the diesel remains untuned, which still means 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque from the 2.8-liter four-cylinder. But it’s going pretty well.

Broadside: The track width increases by 15 centimeters.

The chassis has been extensively revised and is also available in the European version. New wishbones at the front and a reinforced rear axle are used here, and the track width increases noticeably: the wheel spacing on the axles increases by 140 millimeters at the front and 155 millimeters at the rear. There are also stiffer coil springs for the front axle and new shock absorbers with improved heat dissipation and an increased damping rate. As a result, the Hilux GR Sport should have a firmer and sportier ride with reduced body roll.

Inspired by the Dakar Rally

According to Toyota, the “Dakar-inspired design” includes, among other things, a completely unique front design with a new grill, new apron and an underrun guard that is visually extended upwards with a trim piece. The car sits on 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, and red brake calipers with the GR label signal sportiness. Particularly striking are the black wheel arch covers that counteract the widened track. As a further off-road attribute, there are also sturdy sill protection tubes, which also serve as an entry aid. Two new robust tow hooks at the rear ensure the perfect finish.

In the interior, in addition to sports seats with embroidered headrests and red seat belts, there is also a revised version of the multimedia system with smartphone integration. Apple Carplay runs wirelessly; a connection cable is required for Android Auto. Sales of the new version of the Hilux GR Sport will begin in the first half of the year, with delivery to retailers in the second half of 2024. There are no prices yet, but over 60,000 euros can be expected.

Ford RangerToyota Hilux

With the new GR Sport-Hilux at the beginning of 2023, Toyota Australia went much further technically than the European headquarters with the model variant of the same name that we have previously sold. This may also be due to the premiere of the Ford Ranger Raptor, which is making big waves, especially in Australia. With a modified off-road chassis and a good portion of additional power, the GR Sport is prepared for duels in the outback. We had already wanted this for the EU market back then. Now the wish has come true and the spicy Aussie version is coming to us. Unfortunately without engine tuning.
