The president also confirmed for the first time in an interview with US TV channel CNN on Wednesday that US troops are training the Taiwanese armed forces on the island. The fact of this initiative was first confirmed this month by a Pentagon spokesman for the AFP news agency.

Cai’s remarks were made after the US president Joe Biden at the virtual East Asia summit Beijing on flights of its warplanes near Taiwan. Chinese Prime Minister Li Kechian also attended the summit.

The Taiwanese president gave an interview to CNN on Tuesday, but it was published on Wednesday. Asked if she was confident that the United States would help defend Taiwan against China if necessary, Cai said: “I have faith [tam].”

She mentioned “wide-ranging cooperation with the United States to increase our defense capabilities,” including military training of Taiwanese forces by the United States.

The Taiwanese president said that despite China’s aggressive stance, she was ready to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to “reduce misunderstandings” and discuss the differences between the Chinese and Taiwanese political systems.

“We can sit down and talk about our differences and try to reach an agreement so that we can coexist peacefully,” Cai said.

Taiwan and mainland China have been managed separately, since the island was home to the nationalist government of the Republic of China defeated in the civil war in 1949, and the communist-occupied mainland of China declared the People’s Republic of China as part of its territory.

The United States, Taiwan’s largest supplier of military goods, has expressed support for Taiwan and also criticized China. Beijing, in turn, blames rising tensions on Washington’s policies, including arms supplies to Taiwan.
