The Student Union announces a national strike from September 16 to 18 | Society

He Student Union has announced a students strike throughout Spain the days September 16, 17 and 18 in protest of the conditions under which the next school year 2020-2021 will begin, marked by the COVID-19. At the gates of Ministry of Education, the union has called for the right “to a face-to-face, quality public education with safe classrooms.” It has also demanded a drop in the ratios and a massive hiring of teachers.

The union spokesperson, Coral Latorre, has called on all students to support this strike to demand that the “disaster” of “online” education of the past year should not be repeated and to stop criminalizing young people because of the outbreaks and because of the education situation.

The SE has ensured that will also support all mobilizations called in Madrid by the Green Tide and the strikes, also in the Madrid community, announced by CCOO, UGT, CGT and STEM for September 9 and 10.

“Young people want to go back to class”

“We young people want to go back to class”, has emphasized Latorre, who has criticized that the Government does not invest a minimum of 7% of GDP in education and has proposed a tax on large fortunes to dedicate it to education.

The union has asked the Minister of Education, Isabel Celaá, a public school rescue plan.

Latorre has rejected that the educational community “return to pay the consequences of an educational policy that has failed and is not part of any social shield.” “They are going to have us in front of them and they are going to have us on the street,” Latorre stressed.

They have also asked Celaá, who has not replied to the letters that the SE has sent him, to open a negotiation table with the entire educational community so that the demands are met, starting with a reduction in ratios or the hiring of teachers to achieve it. “There is no time to lose”, has also urged the union spokesperson, who has opted for some face-to-face classes.

Latorre, who has criticized “the educational policies of the right”, has also referred to the ministers of United We Can, specifically the vice president, Pablo Iglesias, to tell him: “You cannot allow the chaos that is being experienced at the beginning of the year, you must publicly support our demands and stand next to those of us who defend public schools.”
