While most countries are releasing more and more coronavirus measures, China has been sticking to a zero-covid policy since the start of the pandemic. According to Chinese President Xi, the virus needs to be completely eradicated, a policy that regularly leads to lockdowns.
It protest today in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou is indicative of growing dissatisfaction in China with strict coronavirus measures. Even during the total block from Shanghai in the spring there were already criticisms. The buildings where people were to be quarantined became increasingly crowded and there would not be sufficient access to fresh food.
However, several Chinese cities have been locked down again in recent months, although the number of corona infections has been low compared to other countries. President Xi announced last month that there will be no relaxation of the zero-covid policy. And Shanghai Disney amusement park ditch the gates at the end of October due to a corona epidemic. Visitors could not leave the park unless they showed a negative test. The attractions remained open for locked-in visitors.
