“The state government must follow words with deeds”

Yesterday, Wednesday, the state government of Lower Saxony spoke with energy suppliers, trade unions and the employment agency about a hardship fund because of the sharp rise in energy prices. Friedrich Stubbe, state chairman of the VdK Lower Saxony-Bremen social association, says:

“We see it as a positive signal that there is now movement at state level on the subject of ‘relief for citizens in the energy crisis’. The state government correctly recognized that people on low incomes are particularly hard hit by the current rapidly rising prices. So far, however, this group of people has been pretty much forgotten in the talks about relief benefits and that must not happen again! After the Federal Government’s inadequate relief package, he made it clear that the Prime Minister wanted to work to relieve the burden on his population and also criticized the lack of a 300-euro flat rate for (disabled) pensioners and recipients of sickness benefits. After this announcement, we now expect concrete steps from the state government! What is particularly important is rapid and lasting relief. Because in a crisis, the end of which is not yet in sight, one-off payments fizzle out faster than the famous drop in the ocean.

Whatever the desired hardship fund will look like – the VdK would have a proposal that is long overdue to help people on the subsistence level: raising basic security to 600 euros and a monthly crisis surcharge of at least 100 euros! For those who have barely made ends meet financially up to now, this inflation is literally ripping the rug from under their feet. From the point of view of the VdK, the urgently needed increase in the standard rates must not be postponed any longer in this tense situation!”

VdK, Christina Diekmann
