The Southern Courier | The end of the 3G network in the United States will complicate the life of those who want to recharge their electric vehicles

The information has been circulating for some time, but it is from February that our American neighbors will gradually end the 3G network in the United States to make way for the faster 4G and 5G network. This seems good news initially for those who want to take advantage of faster technology that is better suited to their needs. However, America’s EV charging network is currently booming, with GM investing billions in its EV conquest and others following suit. But as providers begin to cut 3G networks to make way for 5G, some charging stations are going offline, leaving many motorists stranded.

Communication problems

Several more or less large charging networks work with 3G technology to communicate between the terminal and its subscribers, such as the Charge Point network. With 3G disappearing, there is no longer any way to communicate between the terminal and its user, therefore unable to recharge. Several Superchargers from Tesla (which has the largest and oldest charging network) still work with 3G technology. No doubt the networks will upgrade to 4G LTE, but there will undoubtedly be a few months of uncertainty before everything is settled.

Canada will have more time

Canadian networks have taken a deferred approach with 3G technology. Major networks like Bell, Telus and Rogers have given themselves until 2025 to fully transition to 4G LTE and 5G. This could be done sooner if all upgrade work is completed before 2025.

Planned 3G shutdown dates in the United States

The AT&T network will be the first to end 3G in February 2022. Sprint will follow in March and Verizon in December. By the end of 2022, 3G will be off the books in the United States. If you’re crossing the US border this summer, make sure your charging network is up to date.
