There used to be a mill in Ascain where the inhabitants of the surrounding country came to bring their grain. The owner of the place, a certain Sougaret, passed for a happy fellow. Rich, feared by all, his gloomy mood was often so quarrelsome that few people dared to argue with him. Angry to death with his neighbor Haraneder, nicknamed Jolimon, Sougaret ended up being summoned before the Justice of the Peace of Saint Jean de Luz, who ruled in favor of the less fortunate litigant. The miller of Ascain has just lost his wife following an illness, he is now a widower. Never mind, Sougaret hires a village resident named Marie.
