The Slovak volleyball players did not succeed in their third match at the European Championships 2021. In Monday’s match of the C-group in Zadar, they lost to the favored Italians 1: 3, but they still live a real chance to advance to the round of 16.
After the losses with the Hungarians (1: 3) and the home Croats (0: 3), the charges of coach Marco Fenogli were not enough for their conquerors from the eight-finals of the home European Championship 2019 in Bratislava and the reigning vice-champions of the Italian world. In the fourth mutual duel, however, they won a historically premier set against them.
The Slovaks still rank 5th in the table and they have the last two fights in the group ahead of them, which will be crucial for them – on Tuesday they will play against the Swiss (20.00) and on Thursday against the Belarusians (17.00).
Four teams from each of the four groups will advance to the elimination round. The participants of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the Italians, as well as the Croatians, won the promotion to the eight-finals in advance.
C-group:

The Slovaks started in the same line-up as against the Croats, the Italians in the strongest composition also with the superstar Egonu. The Slovaks were not afraid of big names and kept up with the favorite from the beginning. In the first set, the Italians bounced back at 16:15 to 19:15, but produced up to 12 mistakes.
From the second part, Hrušecká, Fričová and debutante at ME Šunderlíková came to the field. The Italians managed to escape from Syllová from 7: 6 to 13: 6, it was already on board Krišková instead of Šunderlíková. After Žernovičová’s essay, the Slovaks reduced it to 10:14 and continued to perform a sympathetic and combative performance, but they did not get closer in the score. At the end of the set, coach Fenoglio made his debut at the European Championships and pound Jančová. Krišková did well (attack 71%), on the contrary, the star Egonu had only a 33 percent success rate.

Before the third act, Radosová replaced Žernovičová in the line-up and the Slovaks, thanks to her points, got to a smaller blockbuster in the middle of the set (10:10, 13:10), to which coach Mazzanti responded with a time-out. His team could not get closer until the state of 14:17, but the end was in a balanced state (17:17). In the end, the Slovaks, who played with gusto, won two sets after the attack of Radosová (24:22) and at the first moment enjoyed winning the set, but the “challenge” finally revealed a touch on the block and the Italians were able to equalize (24:24). However, the Slovaks got to the other two set-ups (25:24, 26:25) and turned the fourth place into a car after the Italian smash.
In the fourth part, the Italians no longer allowed a possible loss of points, thanks to successful blocks they jumped from 8: 7 to 12: 7 and controlled the development until the end, the first swordball was turned into a sharp attack by blocker Chirichell. The most scoring player was Egonuová (19), in the Slovak team Radosová (12) before the alternating Fričová (11) and Krišková (10).

We put the Italians under pressure during the whole match, we played very well and as a team. We have 14 players and they are all ready to come and help the team, that is very important. I believe that we are ready for tomorrow, a key match awaits us, we will fight. It is important that we leave the field with a clear conscience that we have done our best. ”
Barbora Koseková, Captain of the Slovak Republic: “It simply came to our notice then. After two really unsuccessful matches, however, we corrected our taste. We set ourselves completely differently and improved a lot of things. It will definitely help us in terms of confidence that we won a set against the Italians. I hope we will build on that. ”
Romana Krishková: “I think we enjoyed the match. It is not played against the Italians every day. We fought for every ball, we put everything into it, we showed a nice performance. It’s a pity that we didn’t bother them even more, but the profit of the set is also a success for Slovakia. ”
