– The situation is serious – NRK Trøndelag

St. Olav’s hospital announces on Tuesday afternoon that they are raising emergency preparedness to the yellow level and postponing planned activities that may await.

The reason is the persistently high number of patients ready for discharge, and a large influx of patients on St. Olav both on Øya in Trondheim and in Orkland.

The state administrator in Trøndelag has been notified of the situation.

The hospital is full

– When we do not get discharged finished patients, it means that the wards are full and acutely ill patients who come to the emergency room stay there for too long. This entails challenges related to patient safety, says hospital director Grethe Aasved.

Today, there are 39 patients ready for discharge at St. Olav’s. The number has varied between 25 and 40 in recent weeks.

– We are now in a demanding situation where employees in the hospital have a very tough load to ensure the safety of patients. Employees have been in this situation for a long time, and I am concerned about the employees’ workload and health, she continues.

Must take into account increasing infection

Increasing coronary heart disease in Trondheim also means that the hospital must take into account more hospitalized coronary patients.

On Tuesday, seven people were admitted to St. Olav’s hospital with the coronavirus. A person receives intensive care with a respirator.

The hospital states that this is a manageable level – but that the situation can change quickly.

St. Olav’s hospital is also closely following the RS infection among children and the upcoming flu season

– The measures we are now implementing are necessary for us to handle the overall situation. We review the operating situation carefully and hope that the measures will affect as few patients as possible, says the hospital director.
