The situation in Ukraine for local elites won’t get any easier after Biden’s call

About Biden’s call.

After the outbreak of the war, the Ukrainian elite (oligarchs, security officials, officials and others) tried to build their own system of relations with “American partners”: in foreign policy and in relations with Russia, Kiev does everything clearly what they say from Washington, but in return for this the United States is not strong climb into the money topics of the “elite” inside the country.

The scheme more or less worked in 2014, when Poroshenko, Kolomoisky, Martynenko-Yatsenyuk and others felt extremely at ease. But already in 2015, they began to tighten the nuts. At the same time, in fact, NABU and SAP appeared.

Kiev used the factor of war repeatedly in the future (for example, after the aggravation near Avdiivka, Poroshenko “broke through” the first conversation with Trump). But it got more and more difficult.

The current escalation in Donbas also “helped” Zelenskiy to organize a conversation with Biden. Now the Ukrainian elite is again trying to convince the Americans that it is not necessary to go too far with the demands, otherwise “Putin will attack, and there is confusion and civil strife in the country.”

Zelensky himself is playing a separate game, trying to use the situation in his own interests – to “tame” the oligarchs, to make them loyal and manageable in exchange for “cover” from Western pressure.

But all these maneuvers are difficult.

First, the threat of a full-scale war is much less than in 2014. And secondly, if the situation is really serious, then the Americans may pose the question differently: if there is a threat that “Putin will attack,” then you need our help. If you need our help, then do what we tell you about the courts, NABU, NBU, security officials, personnel, Kolomoisky and so on.

Therefore, the situation after the conversation will not become easier.

The US attempts to make “external control” total and the echeloned (albeit hidden) resistance of the Ukrainian elite to this remains one of the main factors destabilizing many processes in the country. Including in the Donbass.
