The shutdown of car production affected by the lack of chips is coming to an end

Because the company, like other automakers, was facing a global shortage of semiconductors – the supply of chips for cars was affected by the coronavirus outage of production in Asia – it had to reduce its own production more than originally expected. The current shortcoming (these were not the first problems of this type) was mainly related to the spread of covid-19 in one of the factories in Malaysia.

The company-wide holiday, which the carmaker calls a collective name more precisely, has thus been extended. It was originally scheduled for the 31st and 32nd calendar weeks – due to a lack of chips, however, the production shutdown came before it began. And the shortage of chips of other components was such that it was already clear in advance that at the beginning of the 33rd calendar week (from 16 to 22 August) production would not start in full.

It only comes with a week’s delay; however, some Škoda Auto operations, such as the production of engines, gearboxes, axles or the installation of batteries, or the foundry and forge, started a few days earlier. Selected assembly line workers also came to work as early as week 33 to ensure the completion of cars that remained incomplete at the start of the shutdown.

Employees received information that this would be the case before the public holiday – while the chairman of the works council Jaroslav Povšík informed that he managed to negotiate an obstacle with the company’s management with 85 percent of the average salary.

Even during the outage, however, the traffic in the car plant did not stop. Maintenance work is traditionally planned for public holidays – and otherwise it was not this time either. There are also non-stop operations, and during the holiday calm, some administrative staff, guards or people from Aramark providing food or developers from Česany also go to work.
