Jacob Chansley, known as the “Shaman of QAnon”, pleaded guilty Friday to charges of participating in an assault on Congress in January, CNBC reported. It comes nearly eight months after the man became widely known for his strange appearance when he invaded the Capitol with many other supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Chansley, who is in jail without bail since his arrest in January, faces up to 20 years in prison on one of the six charges against him. But the 33-year-old man in Phoenix, Arizona, he will probably receive a less severe punishment than thatwhen he was convicted on November 17. A prosecutor said that the rough calculation of these guidelines implies imprisonment from 41 to 51 months in prison. The time he was in prison after his arrest will also be deducted.
Judge Royce Lambert accepted Chansley’s plea agreement with prosecutors after ruling that he was mentally fit to understand the trial. Chansley’s lawyer, Albert Watkins, told the judge that his client had not planned to take part in the riot and had not been violent. Prison psychologists had previously diagnosed the man as suffering from mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety.
