The senseless crush of Napoli – 1-6 the biggest defeat ever for Ajax

– We gave them childishly simple goals. 1-6 is obviously too much. We have to raise our level. Unfortunately, Napoli made it clear to us. We just weren’t good enough. Napoli outclassed us, Ajax Steven Berghuis told Dutch television according to Reuters.

“It is rare to see an away team perform so impressively,” writes Uefa about the match.

Coach Luciano Spalletti made the sign of the cross and blew a kiss to the evening sky of Amsterdam. When Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored 5-1 after Ajax’s weak defensive play with half an hour to go, parts of the crowd rose and went home.

First Italian team to score six away goals

In the first three games of the group stage, Napoli beat Liverpool 4-1, Rangers 3-0 and now 6-1 against Ajax. They have a maximum of nine points and a 13-2 goal difference.

“You will probably have to wait a long time before Ajax are hopelessly outclassed at home as they were tonight,” writes Uefa.

There was a class difference at the Johan Cruijff Arena. Ajax have nothing to do and Dusan Tadic was also sent off after his second yellow card with 20 minutes remaining. At that point it was already 5-1, so that card had no meaning for the result.

Napoli have also set a record: being the first Italian club to score six away goals in the Champions League.
