The Security Council extends the mechanism to deliver aid to Syria through Turkey for 6 months

The United Nations Security Council unanimously approves the extension of the system of transporting aid to Syrian refugees through the Bab al-Hawa crossing, and the US delegate vows not to provide any support to government projects until a global agreement will be reached.

  • The Security Council unanimously agrees to extend the supply of aid to Syria through Turkey

The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution extending the operation of the aid transportation system for displaced Syrians through the Bab al-Hawa crossing point for a period of six months, until 10 July 2023.

The formula for this agreement was reached between the members of the Council without changing this decision with respect to what was stated in the previous decisions on the matter. These decisions had underlined the need to increase aid in all lines and to support the first “recovery” projects.

For her part, the US delegate promised not to provide any support to government projects until a comprehensive deal is completed, according to her interpretation of UN Security Council resolutions, especially resolution 2254 .

Interestingly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned last month that the already deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria was getting worse, in his report presented to the Security Council.

Guterres also said millions of Syrians could not survive the winter if aid shipments from Turkey to northwest Syria were not renewed next month, adding that cross-border aid to the northwest would still be an “indispensable part ” of humanitarian operations to reach all those in need.

Well, I mentioned Associated pressYesterday, Sunday, a convoy of 18 trucks entered the Idlib region through the front lines controlled by the Syrian army.

On Friday, the agency said 14 rescue trucks had passed from Turkey through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, which is Idlib’s only land connection to the outside world.
