The second wave grows in Spain and some localities call for voluntary confinement – Télam

Several regional executives reported today figures that mark an increase in infections

Several Spanish localities were forced this Sunday to restrict the mobility of their inhabitants to try to stop the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which is growing day by day, while the different government levels deal with some judges who consider that the confinement measures violate the fundamental rights of citizens.

This is the case of the small Madrid town of Tielmes, with only 2,600 inhabitants, where the regional Executive decided today to recommend voluntary confinement to its citizens, after a judge this week rejected the limitation of leisure and the ban on smoking in public that the Community of Madrid had approved, as reported by the EFE news agency.

Although the Ministry of Health does not provide official data during the weekend, several regional executives today reported figures that mark an increase in infections, as is the case of the Basque Country, Catalonia or Andalusia, which makes both health workers and those responsible for the administration speak already of the second wave of the pandemic.

Catalonia, one of the regions most affected by the coronavirus, reported 1,125 new infections today and the risk of re-outbreak index maintains the slight upward trend of recent days.

The Basque Country also recorded another 661 positive cases from Covid-19 in the last few hours, the third highest figure since the start of the pandemic, and something similar occurs in Andalusia, with 593 positives in the last 24 hours.

Madrid did not provide new data this Sunday, but at the end of yesterday five new outbreaks and faces the end of the summer with triggered infections -more than 29,000 positives in a month-, an increase that forced to rethink the return to school and has caused that health authorities advise residents of the most affected areas to stay at home.

However, the merchants and sellers of the Madrid Rastro, demanded today for the eighth consecutive Sunday to demand the opening of the traditional market, which was closed in March due to the coronavirus, and have accused the Madrid City Council, led by José Luis Martínez-Almeida, wanting to destroy this space that has been part of the city’s historical and cultural heritage for almost 300 years.

The protest began in the central Plaza del Cascorro and a large mural with black and white historical photographs of the vendors and their ancestors was displayed along the Ribera de Curtidores street.

Some 400 people, according to the organizers, participated in the mobilization organized by the El Rastro Punto Es Association, the Argatsana association and the Independent Rastro Association (Asiveras), and they displayed a banner that read “Almeida, the mayor of Madrid threatens the historic Rastro “.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Social Rights has summoned the autonomous communities tomorrow to analyze the situation of the nursing homes in the face of the coronavirus outbreaks unleashed this summer and the difficulties they face to avoid them, after in the last days these centers have returned to register deaths of the elderly.
