Wealthy and scandalous American heir Robert Durst, recently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his best friend after years of lawsuits with many twists and turns, has died in prison at the age of 78, world agencies reported.
The causes of death are natural, related to Durst’s many health problems, said his lawyer Chip Lewis and said that he has repeatedly raised the issue of these health problems of his client in court in the last few years, reports BTA.
Durst was found guilty in September by a Los Angeles court of killing his girlfriend Susan Berman with a bullet to the head at her home in 2000 in Beverly Hills. The prosecution alleges that Durst tried to hide his role in the murder of his wife Kathleen by killing Berman to prevent her from answering questions from investigators into Kathleen’s 1982 disappearance.
Durst has always denied all charges against him. He was charged with the murder of his wife in October in New York.
Durst was arrested in March 2015 on the eve of the last episode of a biographical documentary by HBO. The series focused on another bloody episode in Durst’s life – the murder of his neighbor, whom he then dismembered and threw into the sea. In this case, Durst was acquitted thanks to an army of prestigious lawyers who argued that he acted in self-defense, that there was an accidental shot and that Durst acted under the influence of alcohol.
However, in one episode of the documentary series, Durst was filmed muttering, “What I did killed them all, obviously.” In a conversation with prosecutors, he defended himself, saying that he was under the influence of drugs during the filming of the film and these words did not mean anything special.
Durst is the heir to one of New York’s largest real estate families.
