The SC Verl moves up to the third division after a 1-1 draw against Lokomotive Leipzig – soccer – sport

The second draw is enough to advance: SC Verl made it to the third division after a 1-1 (0-1) relegation second leg against Lokomotive Leipzig. After the 2-2 in the first leg in Leipzig, the majority of goals scored away went to East Westphalia. After Julian Stöckner’s own goal (43.minute), Ron Schallenberg’s equalizer in the 73rd minute was enough to advance.

“We are incredibly proud. Our team character decided the thing”, Verl scorer Schallenberg cheered after the game. His trainer Guerino Capretti was moved: “I’m just incredibly proud of this team. We were three times behind in the course of this relegation and came back every time. It’s fantastic!”

“Home game” in Bielefeld

The SC Verl had to give up his home right voluntarily, so to speak, and received it in Bielefeld for the second leg. Because of the Corona outbreak at Tönnies in the Gütersloh district, the game could not take place in the Verler Stadium.

Nevertheless, the East Westphalia started like a classic home team. With many short passes from man to man, the team from coach Capretti secured themselves, the challenger from Leipzig was also deprived of the opportunity to exert the pressure they wanted from the start. Because the SC had an advantage because of the first leg result: A 0-0 would be enough for the losers to advance.

Stöckner makes his own goal

So the game rippled for a long time without highlights, only after 37 minutes did the few reporters note the first chance for Leipzig in the otherwise empty stadium: David Urban put a header to the corner just above the box. His counterpart Robert Zickert did the same in the 43rd minute, who, after a free kick from the half field, set his headbutt a little too high.

The Verler remained passive – which should take revenge a little later: After a right flank from Leipzig’s Maik Salewski, SCV defender Julian Stöckner unhappily caught the ball with the back of his head and thus over-kicked his goalkeeper Robin Brüseke with a classic own goal. And suddenly it was 1-0 for Leipzig and everything was different. Leipzig had given pressure to Verl.

Schallenberg hits out of nowhere for 1: 1

The Verler should not cope with this mortgage for a long time. At the beginning of the second half, the Saxons seemed more agile, more self-conscious and more determined – Verl was now also in the important duels. So much looked like a Leipzig success. Until the 73rd minute. Then Schallenberg suddenly got the shot after submission by Patrick Schikowski. And he sank the ball from 16 meters flat bottom right to 1: 1. A goal from nowhere.

And a hit that was enough in the end. Despite all efforts, Lokomotive, whose predecessor club VfB Leipzig was one of the most successful clubs in the former GDR in the 70s and 80s, could no longer turn the tide.

Third division home games in Paderborn

After his relegation to the Oberliga in 2003, the SCV is now back in the third-highest German division 17 years later. However, because the stadium in Verl does not meet the requirements of the DFB for this division, the SCV will play their home games in Paderborn in the coming season.
