Sweden. Estonia ferry disaster. People investigating the wreck accused of violating a sea grave

The Swedish prosecutor’s office accused two members of the film crew of “violating the grave”, which is the wreck of the MS Estonia ferry resting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. In 1994, 852 people were killed in the shipwreck.

In September last year, a film crew, in which the Swedes were also Germans, with the help of a German submarine and a diving robot approached the wreck of Estonia while filming documentary material.

Justifying the indictment, the Swedish prosecutor Helene Gestrin from the domestic department for international and organized crime emphasized that “there has been a violation of the grave, which is now Estonia”. The two accused who were the first to hear the allegations under international law adopted in 1995 by Sweden, Finland and Estonia to prevent the penetration of a ferry wreck, threaten a fine and up to two years in prison.

One of the greatest marine disasters of the late 20th century

MS Estonia, sailing from Tallinn to Stockholm, sank on September 28, 1994 in international waters off the coast of Finland, becoming a resting place for the majority of 852 victims. It was one of the largest maritime disasters of the late 20th century.

According to an official report from 1997, the sinking of Estonia was due to structural defects in the bow door, which could not withstand the pressure of waves. However, many alternative theories have arisen, e.g. that illegal weapons were carried by ferry. The adoption of a law prohibiting diving near the wreck has intensified this speculation.
