The SABR: Roger Federer’s Inventive Tennis Technique that Shook the Tennis World

Geniuses have the instinct to create things different from the rest on an almost regular basis. They turn flashes of brilliance into daily life, they do routine things unimaginable for the rest of mortals. When Federer arrived in Cincinnati, back in 2015, he decided to add to his legacy a signature hit: the SABR.

SABR. Sneak Attack By Roger. It’s funny: very few know or remember how this name came to be, but his invention is as organic as tennis itself. Roger Federer. She came out naturally, almost instinctively. That was eight years ago, but many still remember that genius that turned the world of tennis upside down, provoking responses from names like Boris Becker, John McEnroe and his great rival that season, Novak Djokovic. What did the SABR consist of? Did it continue later? What did it engender in your tour mates and how did it contribute to one of the most perfect weeks of Roger Federer’s career? We have broken down all of this, in the form of a story, in our Youtube channel.

AN INVENTION WITH AN OBJECTIVE: SAVE TIME AND BE MORE AGGRESSIVE

Back in 2015, Federer reaped the fruits of his collaboration with Stefan Edberg. With the Swede sharing command tasks with the perennial Severin Luthi, Roger set out to buy time, find a less demanding style for his physique and age and, thus, regain control of all his matches. Among all the weapons that he had within his reach, he took out of his hat a variant that was not yet in his arsenal, a delicious sobrepique or boat soon on the service of the rival player which placed him close to the net before his opponent could respond. A return practically on the service line that had a meaning already well known to the world of tennis: SABR.

That invention was aimed at increase Federer’s aggressiveness and surprise effect, second in command of a season in which only Novak Djokovic interceded in his way in the big tournaments. The Serbian stole finals like those of Indian Wells, Rome and Wimbledon, forcing Federer to look for solutions. The inexhaustible creativity of the Swiss led to the invention of the SABR which, in turn, allowed him to experience one of the most perfect weeks of his career in Cincinnati. He didn’t lose a single set. he did not give up his service on any occasion, defeated the number two and one in the world in the semifinals and final, respectively, raised a new Masters 1000 title, took a small revenge on Djokovic and showed that a lot of magic still flowed from his racket. In each match he used the SABR with more success than disappointment, never going so far as to ‘overuse’ it, relying solely on his instincts to select it.

BECKER AND COMPANY REACT

The SABR became on everyone’s lips, including that of Boris Becker, at that time Djokovic’s coach. The German did not put hot cloths and called this new coup de “a bit disrespectful” towards the service of their rivals, which generated a crossover of statements between the German and Roger in full dispute of the US Open 2015. Nor did Nole want to give his opinion on a blow that martyred him during the Cincinnati final, but before which he knew how to adjust his tennis in the face of a new Grand Slam final in one of the greatest rivalries in the history of sports. That match, however, is a very different story: if you want to know more about Federer’s perfect week, the SABR effect on the circuit and learn how it was born, do not hesitate to watch our video on YouTube. What do you think of the SABR? Do you think he could be revived through any player on the current circuit?
