Despite three goals in advance after 24 minutes, RWDM suffered but ultimately won 2-4 in Kortrijk on Sunday during the 3rd day of the Relegation Playoffs of the Jupiler Pro League at the Stade des Éperons d’or. After the 3-1 victory against Euepn, this second success in a row allows the Brussels residents to take five points ahead in second place.
The RWDM quickly took the lead. After a quick transition, Xavier Mercier came up against Lucas Pirard but the goalkeeper put the ball back into Molenbeek’s feet and Makhtar Gueye pushed the ball into the empty goal (11th). Molenbeek did it again three minutes later, Sousa heading a corner from the left from Mercier (14th). A penalty converted by Carlos Alberto then allowed Brussels to lead by three goals after 24 minutes. Kortrijk then created a few chances and came back to two goals thanks to Thierry Ambrose (37th), who followed a shot from Gianni Bruno blocked by Sousa. In the second half, after several missed chances from both teams, Davies further reduced the gap, his weak header being helped by a deflection off the post to deceive Guillaume Hubert (66th). Under pressure from Kerels, Gueye missed two new opportunities (76th, 84th) but Jeff Reine-Adelaide finally delivered the RWDM, taking advantage of the disorganization of the opposing defense on the counter (90th+8). With 30 points, the RWDM consolidates its second place, synonymous with a play-off against the winner of the Challenger Pro League Playoffs. Charleroi is first with three more points and Eupen and Kortrijk each have 25 points. The third day of the Playoffs ends at 7:15 p.m. with Charleroi-Eupen.
