Russia Advantage

Despite reported initial setbacks for failing to capture the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, Russian forces are slowly taking control of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Today, Moscow’s troops still control large swathes of territory linking Crimea with eastern Russia.

Russia’s failure to seize Kiev may be a shame, but Putin can always argue that the main goal of the invasion was to secure the independence of the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, two territories that broke away from Ukraine.

Putin said at the start of the invasion there was no intention to occupy all of Ukraine. That means he will be able to display any territory gained apart from securing Donetsk and Luhansk as victories.
