The Risk of Persistent Covid is Halved with Vaccination

Studies on persistent Covid continue and it has been found that the vaccine halves the risk of developing Covid largoand that overweight people, women, smokers and those over 40 are more likely to suffer from it.

This finding is led by a new investigation with more than 860,000 patients – being the largest of its class – from the University of East Anglia (United Kingdom), published in the journal ‘JAMA Internal Medicine’.

The study has also revealed that the asmathe COPD -Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-, the type 2 diabetescoronary heart disease, immunosuppression, anxiety and the depression pose a higher risk of prolonged Covid. Together with the patients who were hospitalized for a acute covid infection.

Professor Vassilios Vassiliou, from UEA Norwich Medical School and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, notes that “Long Covid is a complex condition that develops during or after having Covid, and is classified as as such when symptoms continue for more than 12 weeks”.

Although this disease affects people in different ways, symptoms more recurring are shortness of breathcough, palpitations, headaches, intense fatiguechest pain or tightness, brain fog, insomnia, dizziness, joint pain, depression y anxiety, tinnitus -when you feel a ringing sound or other noises in one or both ears-, loss of appetiteand changes in the sense of smell or taste.

According to the propensity of the female sex, older age, increased BMI and smoking to suffer from persistent Covid, Research co-author Dr Eleana Ntatsaki, from University College London and Ipswich Hospital, stresses that these discoveries “help to define the full demographics and risk factors of developing long Covid. We can now better understand and care for this population through long-term care planning, support for long-Covid clinics, and raising awareness of the prevalence and impact of this condition.”

“In addition, we can have a better strategy to optimize any modifiable risk factor, with public health promotion campaigns, encouraging smoking cessation, vaccination and control of healthy weight in the target population”, he concludes.
