The Rise of Women Wearing Ties: A Fashion Trend Taking Over Red Carpet, Social Media, and the Streets

Can we call it the most striking trend of the past year? On several catwalks, it was not the men, but the women who appeared with a tie around their necks. And the trend is also popular on the street, social media and the red carpet. Sorry, guys: your tie collection is there to share this year.

It has been in fashion for a while now: business men’s items that are nice androgynous and also worn by women. Just look at the tailor-made suit. For three years now, trouser suits have been just as plentiful in the women’s department, also in candy colors, bold prints or unique cuts. And now it seems time for the next step in that trend. The costume: check. Tie: give that here too.

We started seeing the first appearances of this as early as 2022. Major brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior and Ralph Lauren already teased the accessory for women for the autumn collection. Major stars such as Jenna Ortega, Jessica Chastain and Zendaya suddenly took the item to the red carpet.

In 2023, fashion brands shifted even higher. At Valentino, the women almost exclusively wore (black) ties during fashion week in Paris. At Dior and Alexander McQueen, the ties were just as sleek and just as present. Prada — co-led by our compatriot Raf Simons — went for a more creative look: their ties blended in with the women’s shirt or were reminiscent of a flower.

Today, the item eventually floods social media, where countless young women put together the most diverse outfits with the tie. In particular, ‘nerdy chic’ and the ‘sexy secretary’ are two styles that could dominate this new year. Also known as the micro-trend librarian core (librarian style, ed.), loved by singer Billie Eilish, among others.

How do you wear the trend yourself?

As a woman, you do not have to wear a tie with a tight, strict suit. You will immediately notice this when you look on the street to see how ‘ordinary’ fashion-conscious people are picking up the trend. In ever increasing numbers. Edgy is possible, but more subtle or elegant is also possible. And that immediately makes it a lot easier to actually walk out the door yourself.

In addition to the sleek combination with the tailored suit, you can, for example, opt for a comfortable oversized look, with a very loose shirt, loose jacket and loosely knotted tie. You can also create a more feminine ensemble by throwing a dress over your shirt and tie, or even a corset. It becomes a bit more casual if you wear a shirt and tie with a long skirt and a nice dress. And of course you can play with ties in prints and colors. Tip: you can often find such more playful ones in second-hand stores.

Heeled shoes or a pair of ballerinas are also the quickest way to make the look feel feminine. In any case, less is more works well here: even the simplest outfit immediately looks a lot more interesting as soon as you wear a tie with it.
