The Revolutionary Theories of Stephen Hawking: A Look at His Life and Impact on Cosmology

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Stephen Hawking is a famous theoretical physicist. He has produced many revolutionary theories and changed our understanding of the universe.

Hawking was born in Oxford, England, and raised in a family of doctors. Since childhood, he showed great interest in science and mathematics.

At the age of 17, he was accepted at Oxford University to study physics. When he was 21 years old, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive and fatal neurological disease.

His doctors predicted he would only have a few years to live. However, Hawking challenged this prognosis and continued his studies.

In 1966, Hawking completed his doctorate at Cambridge University. He later became Director of Research at the Center for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge.

Hawking made many important contributions to the field of cosmology and black holes. Hawking also wrote several popular books about science, including “A Brief History of Time” which became an international bestseller.

As a physicist, Hawking has had a significant influence thanks to his work over five decades. Hawking is also popular because of his struggle with Lou Gehrig’s disease which left him paralyzed.

Hawking began his work with a doctoral thesis in 1966. After that, his breakthroughs continued without stopping until his final paper in 2018 was completed just days before his death at the age of 76.

Even though Hawking’s theory seems strange, slowly, it is being accepted in the scientific community. The reason is, new evidence often appears to support Hawking’s theory.

Quoted from the Live Science page on Thursday (13/03/2024), here are several of Hawking’s theories that have been proven correct.

1. Teori Big Bang

Hawking began his work with his doctoral thesis which discussed two competing cosmological theories: Big Bang and Steady State. Both theories examine an expanding universe.

Hawking thinks bing bang evolved from an ultra-compact, super-dense state at a finite time in the past. Meanwhile, Steady State assumes the universe has been expanding forever, with new material constantly being created.

Hawking’s thesis shows that Steady State theory is mathematically contradictory and that the universe started from an extremely small and dense point, called a singularity. Today, Hawking’s description of the Big Bang is almost universally accepted among scientists.
