In a trial held on Thursday night (14), in an extraordinary session of the Minas Gerais Sports Court of Justice (TJD-MG), Atlético was ordered to pay a fine of R$40,000 due to homophobic chants by some his fans in the classic with Cruzeiro, held on February 3rd, at Arena MRV (2-0 defeat), in the third round of the State Championship.

In the trial, the black and white team even ran the risk of having their exclusion from the Campeonato Mineiro determined. This had been the initial request of prosecutor Felipe Bartolomeo Moreira, author of the complaint.

During the classic, every time Rafael Cabral, the opposing team’s goalkeeper, took goal kicks, part of the black and white fans shouted ‘faggot’.

In this way, Atlético was denounced based on article 243 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD) which deals with the practice of “discriminatory, contemptuous or outrageous act, related to prejudice based on ethnic origin, race, sex, color, age , condition of elderly or disabled person”.

Among the penalties provided for this type of act were a fine of R$100 to R$100 thousand, loss of points and field orders.

Initially, the hearing at the TJD was scheduled to be held on February 27th, but was postponed as Atlético had presented documentary and video evidence “late”, not giving the auditors the necessary time to analyze it, which happened this time.

During tonight’s session, Atlético was also tried for throwing objects on the playing field and for invading fans on the pitch, but ended up acquitted in both cases for having managed to identify the perpetrators of the infractions.
