The results of the study said there would be new problems after recovering from Covid-19

KONTAN.CO.ID – LONDON. Researchers warned of new potential dangers to human health after Covid-19. After recovering from Covid-19, patients can experience negative effects.

Recent research has found that one in three Covid-19 survivors is at risk of suffering from mental or neurological disorders. The disorders are said to start appearing within six months.

The results of the study, published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry on Tuesday (6/4), analyzed the health records of 236,379 patients, mostly from the US. It found that 34% had been diagnosed with neurological or psychiatric disease within six months.

Anxiety disorders (17%) and mood disorders (14%) were the most common. These two disorders are called unrelated to how mild or severe the viral infection is experienced.

Researchers are now warning that mental disorders due to Covid-19 do exist and could become a new problem, even after the pandemic is over.

Reported by ReutersThe researchers involved did not say clearly how the virus was linked to psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression. However, the problem was the most common diagnosis among the 14 disorders they saw.

Post-Covid severe cases such as stroke, dementia, and other neurological disorders tend to occur less frequently. But the numbers are quite significant, especially in Covid-19 sufferers with severe symptoms.

Among these patients with severe symptoms, about 7% had a stroke and nearly 2% were diagnosed with dementia after six months.

“Our results show that brain disease and psychiatric disorders are more common after Covid-19 than after flu or other respiratory infections,” said Max Taquet, a psychiatrist at the University of Oxford UK, who co-investigated this phenomenon.

Unfortunately these studies have not been able to pinpoint the biological or psychological mechanisms involved. The researchers only urge that further identification be made to prevent or treat it.

The same study, by the same researchers, found last year that 20% of Covid-19 survivors were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder within three months.
