The renaissance of open air cinemas

It was over 60 years ago: in the 50s and 60s, the drive-in cinemas, particularly in America, celebrated their heyday and attracted thousands of young adults to the huge screens in the open air, while in Papa’s Chevi, popcorn was cheerfully fed and at least just as cheerfully fondled – that valued parents were not there after all.

Several decades later, we are writing 2020, a year that was still pure science fiction at the time. Flying cars, hoverboards, self-lacing sneakers … and a virus called COVID-19, which in a bad horror film from back then would certainly not have taken up topics such as “home office” and “self-made masks with a flower pattern”.

It was during this time that the drive-in theater, or “drive-in theater” as it was called in America, is experiencing its renaissance – despite Netflix, Disney + and a ludicrously large number of purely digital entertainment options. It is the perfect way to show the virus the middle finger – and to venture out into the fresh air in the cozy four walls of your own vehicle.

The new drive-in cinema on the P1 car park at the Düsseldorf Trade Fair, for example, shows how popular spaces of this kind are currently: Every film and every event is usually completely sold out within a few hours. Events? Correctly read. Today’s drive-in cinema leaves the purely cinematic program and extends it to include concerts by bands such as Alligatoah and Brings, party concepts, comedy and cultural programs, as well as Weddings and services.

We think: In a summer without major events, the concept does not only have a future – it is one of the only concepts that have so far been able to be combined with larger crowds in the open air.

The list below will be updated by us in the coming days!

Drive-in cinemas in Düsseldorf

So far you can find these drive-in cinemas in Düsseldorf:

Five tips for visiting the drive-in cinema

1.) Make yourself comfortable! As it can get a bit cooler in the evening, you should urgently think of blankets and comfortable clothes – after all, nobody guarantees your appearance! You have to leave the car’s engine out – that’s why the heating is also eliminated. Remember that!

2.) If you want to make things easier for Corona’s high-demand restaurants, just take a look at “Take Away” at one of his favorite restaurants – meanwhile, an extremely large number of locations offer this service. So you can take your favorite food to the cinema – pure luxury! (PS: Don’t forget cutlery!)

3.) The sound on your car radio is rather poor? Then give your smartphone a try – because it can also be used to call up and play out the required radio frequencies from the cinemas. And it’s not far from the smartphone to the (and hopefully charged) Bluetooth box that you’ve brought with you, or the right headphones.

4.) Clean up the car beforehand. Yes, right, because only very few people who drive to the drive-in for the first time actually think of it: “Oh damn hoe, I actually wanted to vacuum, polish … actually last month, I swear!” – The mountains of garbage in your own car otherwise stand in the way of comfort.

5.) Be there early! Since there is free choice of seats in the drive-in cinema, you should be there on time for admission. So you can position yourself as far forward and in the middle of the screen as possible.
