Laos surprisingly beat Malaysia in the inaugural match of Group B of the 2022 AFF U-23 Cup with a score of 2-1 at Prince Stadium, Phnom Penh, Friday (18/2) afternoon WIB.

In the press conference after the match, Malaysia U-23 coach, Brad Maloney also revealed the reason his team lost to Laos.

“Several Lao players played in the AFF Suzuki Cup as well as the recent AFC U-23 qualifiers. We have six players who made their international debuts today,” said Malaysia U-23 coach Brad Maloney as quoted from the page. AFF.

“We were one goal behind in the second game. It will not be easy,” said Maloney added.

The Laos vs Malaysia match was tight. Malaysia, who are able to dominate the game, still have difficulty in facing Laos’ quick counter -attack.

The Young Tiger team was finally able to break the deadlock at the end of the first half through Selvan Anbualagan’s goal. Malaysia closed the first half with a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Laos increased the intensity of the attack. Laos was finally able to reply to a goal in the 56th minute through a goal from Bounphachan Bounkong which made the score 1-1.

In the 79th minute, Laos managed to turn the lead to 2-1 through defender Phetdavanh Somsanid’s header from a free kick from team captain Bounphachan Bounkong.


As a result of this defeat, Malaysia had to occupy the second position in Group B standings under Laos.

Furthermore, the two teams will meet again in the second match which will be held at Prince Stadium, on Monday (21/2).

The two teams were forced to undergo two meetings in Group B, because the other two contestants in this group, namely the U-23 Indonesian National Team and Myanmar withdrew due to positive cases of Covid-19.
