The reason Indonesian coffee beans are more expensive than imported coffee

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The Indonesian Specialty Coffee Association (AKSI) or the Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia (SCAI) revealed that the price of authentic Indonesian coffee is more expensive than foreign coffee.

Chairman of SCAI Syafrudin said some Indonesian coffee is produced by farmers who cultivate crops in areas that are difficult to reach or remote area.

“By paying a little more than what we should, we are already supporting the farmers. How difficult it is for coffee farmers in Indonesia to grow crops and try to bring coffee from remote area to go to the process area, “he said in the Kulak Kulik Coffee Dialogue the Enjoyment of Coffee Business, Saturday (21/11).

In addition, Indonesian coffee which has successfully penetrated the global market has a high taste compared to coffee in other countries.

“A lot of Indonesian coffees enter the global market. This is SCAI’s job together with coffee stakeholders to jointly foster Indonesian coffee farmers in improving quality, quantity, and providing market access for Indonesian coffee farmers,” he added.

He did not deny that there were still obstacles in the supply chain (supply chain) Indonesian coffee. Because, in general, Indonesian coffee is cultivated by small farmers who have limitations and opportunities to develop products.

SCAI stated that it would collaborate with other stakeholders such as relevant ministries and institutions as well as Bank Indonesia (BI) to unravel the coffee supply chain barriers.

One of the efforts made is communicating with transportation stakeholders and Indonesian coffee processors.

“Then, we educate coffee farmers on how they behave and feel comfortable in coffee cultivation so that they can produce good coffee, the supply chain continues, and buyers are happy so they buy coffee from Indonesian farmers,” he said.

Indonesia is currently the 7th largest coffee exporter in the world with an export share of 4.05 percent in 2019.

Indonesia is below Brazil with a market share of 14.02 percent, Germany 8.74 percent, Vietnam 7.80 percent, Switzerland 7.33 percent, Colombia 7.13 percent, and Italy 4.88 percent.
