The prosecutor’s office has indicted the former director of Ventspils Sports School “Spars” Viktors Zujevs, during whom a four-year-old boy drowned in the pool in 2017, TV3 reports.
A tragedy that caused the whole of Latvia to freeze in horror. During the swimming lessons, a four-year-old boy drowned in the pool in the presence of a coach in Venstpils. As if that were not enough, the injured family cannot leave what happened in the past, because the case has not yet reached the court. It took the police and the prosecutor’s office three years to gather evidence and bring charges.
The prosecutor of the Ventspils Prosecutor’s Office has made a decision on charges of one person being wrongfully killed through negligence. The law provides for a penalty for such an offense – imprisonment for a term of up to five years, temporary deprivation of liberty or forced labor. As prosecutions are currently under way and procedural steps are being taken in order not to prejudice further investigations, no further comments are provided.
The person’s name is not revealed, but it is unofficially known that we are talking about coach Viktor Zujev, the former director of Ventspils Sports School “Spars”.
For the program “Nothing Personal”, he claimed that swimming lessons were no longer carried out, although the photos showed the opposite. He did not give a clear answer either.
Although he is pleased that the case is finally moving, the drowned boy’s father believes that the prosecutor’s office is looking for the easiest way.
The boy’s father believes that an attempt to blame one person will follow. According to him, in addition to the person responsible for what happened, there are other culprits.
At that time, Ventspils Sports Center was managed by Uldis Boitmanis. He resigned after the incident, but the city took care of Lembergs’ party. Boitmanis has held high positions, including in the Board of the Ventspils Freeport Authority and in the Basketball Club “Ventspils”, where he is currently the Chairman of the Board. The State Education Quality Service fined him 70 euros for organizing swimming lessons without a license.
