The prosecutor requested three years in prison for the former ONT journalist Dmitry Semchenko

Prosecutor asked the court found Dmitry Semchenko guilty of deliberate actions aimed at inciting social hatred and discord on the basis of a different social affiliation (part 1 of article 130) of the Criminal Code of Belarus and sentenced him to three years in prison in a general regime colony.

The defender of the political prisoner asked to impose a punishment not related to deprivation of liberty.

March 21 has begun trial of Dmitry Semchenko. He pleaded guilty. However, he explained that he had always been a supporter of dialogue and never called for violence. During the interrogation, Semchenko explained that at the time of writing the publications, he had no hatred for specific social groups. However, he agrees with the conclusions of the expert that his words could provoke social enmity and discord.

The prosecutor’s office stated that in 2020-2022, in various telegram channels and chats, he “posted publications aimed at creating public dislike and hatred towards law enforcement officers, military personnel and government officials.” He was charged with deliberate actions aimed at inciting ethnic or other social enmity or discord (Part 1, Article 130 of the Criminal Code). The maximum penalty under this part of the article is five years in prison.
