The prosecution requested the indictment for “willful violence resulting in the death without intention to give it” of the 32-year-old policeman who shot a motorist in Sevran (Seine-Saint-Denis) on March 26, announced this Friday the public prosecutor of Bobigny, Éric Mathais.
The placement under judicial supervision of the police officer was also requested. The latter will be presented to an examining magistrate in the evening.
The drama took place at midday on Saturday, when a crew from the Aulnay-sous-Bois anti-crime brigade wanted to check the reported stolen van driven by Jean-Paul, a resident of the Beaudottes district in Sevran. .
The policeman pleads “self-defense”
The policeman indicated during his first hearing “to have placed himself at the level of the driver’s window, to have raised his weapon while shouting “police!” and said he had tried several times to open the door which was locked, ”reported the prosecutor. “He saw the driver engage a gear and accelerate strongly. »
The police officer claims to have been “unbalanced”, “to have felt in a state of self-defense” and “to have fired for this reason”.
Seriously injured in the left shoulder blade, the driver died a few hours after his admission to hospital. The autopsy confirmed that the shooting was the cause of death.
A white march from Aulnay-sous-Bois is scheduled for Saturday morning in memory of the victim.
The case led to several nights of violence
The death of this resident of Beaudottes caused five consecutive nights of violence in several municipalities of Seine-Saint-Denis, bordering the district. In Sevran, Aulnay-sous-Bois and Tremblay-en-France, vehicles and garbage cans were set on fire and projectiles were thrown at the police, without causing any injuries.
Since the start of the scuffles, 41 arrests for acts of violence and degradation have taken place, including several concerning minors. Fifteen people have been referred for immediate appearance.
