The production of iPhones will be closed by the end of the year. The plant in India is closed

The plant employs approximately 17,000 people and is now expected to partially resume production with 1,000 employees on Thursday, the official said. He added that the state government had carried out inspections of hostels for employees.

Protests erupted at the plant last week when more than 250 women working in a factory living in one of the hostels had to be treated for food poisoning. The incident highlighted the living conditions of workers, mostly women, living in dormitories near a factory in the southern city of Chennai.

According to the official, the state government asked Foxconn to review the quality of services provided to workers. The Office of Occupational Safety and Health also recommended that the company provide employees with leisure equipment, such as a television, library and indoor games. According to another government source, Foxconn also told officials that he had increased production too quickly and would gradually ensure that the facilities were upgraded for employees before returning to full operation.

It also makes iPhones 13

The Foxconn plant is producing iPhone 12 models and has begun trial production of the iPhone 13. According to analysts, the impact of the plant closure on Apple will be minimal. But the plant is of long-term strategic importance as Apple struggles to reduce dependence on China’s supply chain due to trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Supply chain outages

The interruption of production also came at a time when Apple was facing a supply chain outage due to the pandemic. In October, the company warned that the effects of these problems would worsen in the last quarter of the year.

The riots at Foxconn’s plant are the second such incident to affect Apple’s supply plant in India in the past year. Last December, thousands of contracted employees at the Wistron-owned factory destroyed the company’s equipment and vehicles due to alleged non-payment. The damage at the time was estimated at USD 60 million (CZK 1.3 billion).

Apple began assembling iPhones in India in 2017. Foxconn, Wistron and another Pegatron supplier have jointly pledged $ 900 million to produce iPhones in India within five years.
