Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has completed his working visit to Germany. The last item on the agenda of his trip was a joint press conference, which the Turkish leader gave together with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
It ended on a scandalous note: one of the participating journalists stated that Germany should not supply military fighter jets to the Turkish Air Force because of Ankara’s position on the Gaza conflict. This journalist also addressed Scholz, recalling his recent statement in which he called Erdogan’s attacks on Israel absurd.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz decided not to react to this tirade and simply gave Erdogan the floor.
The Turkish president recalled that his country is a member of NATO and only then moved on to the subject of the Middle East.
– Thousands of Palestinians died or were killed by Israel… Hospitals were destroyed, houses of worship were bombed, churches were bombed. As a Muslim I worry about this. As a Christian, doesn’t it bother you that churches are being bombed? You should have reacted too,” Erdogan said, calling for an end to the language of threats.
– Regardless of whether we get the Eurofighter [изтребители] from Germany or not, there are many countries that produce fighter jets, it’s not just Germany. Of course, you may get them from other countries. For example, in the production of drones, Turkey is leading. As a member of the press, you should not threaten us with this. Please ask good faith questions to which we can provide appropriate answers.
Erdogan then commented on the scandal provoked by the Germans during the conversation with Turkish journalists on board the presidential plane returning from Germany to Turkey, saying that “the chancellor never delved into the matter,” and only the German media have a different position on the issue of fighter jet deliveries to Turkey.
– We have already clearly answered: if they give us these planes, they will give us, if not, then are there no other doors to knock on? There really is, and what else. Do you know what steps were taken before purchasing the S-400 for the air defense system? America did not provide the air defense systems it was supposed to provide, and then we bought the S-400 from Russia. Now we have the S-400. We hope to continue our journey in a much stronger direction. – Turkish media quoted his words.
Also, during his visit to Germany, the Turkish president commented on the letter that relatives of Israeli hostages held by Hamas addressed to him. “They are asking us to intervene for the release of their relatives. We don’t want any Israelis or Palestinians to be captured.” Erdogan said, also noting that “Israel’s position in Gaza is that it kills everyone there, including its own citizens.”
The statements of the Turkish president, which he made before the start of his trip to Europe, were also resonant. In particular, he pointed out that genocide is now taking place in Gaza and Israel is a terrorist state.
