The President of Latvia addresses the European Parliament about Ukraine and the creation of a tribunal for Russia

Levits met with the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Sofra Olery, yesterday in Strasbourg. The press service of the President emphasizes that he appreciated the good cooperation between the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of the European Union during the conversation. Levits expressed Latvia’s support for the creation of a special tribunal to try Russia’s crime of aggression against Ukraine.

On the other hand, in a conversation with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burič, the President expressed his support for the reform of the Council of Europe and the digital agenda. Levits emphasized the priorities of Latvia’s presidency in the Council of Europe expected in mid-May – strengthening the rule of law, democracy and media freedom. Much attention was paid to the support of Ukraine and Russia’s responsibility for the crime of aggression in Ukraine.
