The Presence of ‘Terrorist’ Elements in Ain al-Hilweh Camp: Lebanese Debate and Security Concerns

“Lebanese Debate”

With UNRWA suspending its activities in its medical, educational and social centers in Ain al-Hilweh camp due to the latest round of fighting in early August, and the occupation of its centers by gunmen, in parallel with the continuing state of tension and the recording of sporadic security incidents, and at a suspicious time and outside the internal context in the camp, accompanying political sources propose, More than one question mark about the responsibility of all the Palestinian factions in the camp in confronting this reality, as well as the Lebanese political and security responsibility in dealing with the infiltration of “terrorist” elements from outside the camp into it, especially in light of the return of fears of terrorism infiltrating from Syria into the Palestinian camps, or into Any region in Lebanon.

These sources confirm that the camp, with all its groups and most of its political and security leaders, has been facing for years the burden of the presence of hundreds of Islamist militants belonging to the “Muslim Youth” or “Jund al-Sham”.

And if the recent clashes that destroyed parts of the Ain al-Hilweh camp, and led to the perpetuation of a fragile security equation that is subject to shaking at any moment, the accompanying sources reveal to the “Lebanese Debate” that these militants are not only Palestinians, but also include Lebanese and Syrians, fighters and wanted persons. Some of them are linked to “terrorist” organizations, including “ISIS” and “Al-Qaeda”.

However, the most dangerous thing in this context, according to the sources, is that these gunmen, who have recently returned to the light, do not necessarily move according to Palestinian agendas, but rather form sleeping cells, as well as fortifying themselves in some neighborhoods, and they rarely come out, but they receive large amounts of Money, and recently some of their weapons appeared to the public during the clashes with the “Fatah” movement.

This reality leads to bringing up the security file in the camp again on the discussion table, before any security incidents or problems may occur, as the sources believe that Lebanese officials must anticipate the dangers that may result from any escalation or confrontations that may get the rhythm of regional developments. accelerating.
