“The Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Reboot Officially Shelved by The CW”

TVSome sugar, some salt, and things you love: they were the ingredients for perfect little girls, but apparently not for a perfect remake. Plans to make a live action reboot of the Cartoon Network series ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ have officially been shelved. “Some ideas are just misses.”

The first episodes of the well-known cartoons starring Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup were broadcast in 1998. In 2020, the American channel The CW announced their plan to give the familiar cartoons a new look. In the new TV series, we would see the girls as ‘unworldly twentysomethings’, in the form of actresses Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron and the non-binary Yanna Perrault. The set-up of the series would be much ‘darker and more realistic’ than the cartoons.

The script for the first episode leaked onto the internet, and the response was overwhelmingly negative. After the fiasco, they tried to adjust the script, but after the test recordings it now appears that the studio has put the brakes on the production.

The CW president Brad Schwartz says it was “just a miss”: “It happens a lot with projects like this. There are many ideas that we are trying out. Some are good, some are not. This was such a case. It just didn’t work in practice.”

Schwartz does give a glimmer of hope to fans of the Powerpuff Girls: “We have returned the rights to the studio. They are now free to sell them to anyone, so maybe another channel will do something about them.”
