Krieps I knew nothing about Bachmann’s life and her tragic end. Then I was faced with the question: Do I want to know who the woman was and how she talked? Or do I resist the temptation of everyone thinking what a great actress I am and instead try to understand why it runs the way it does. And why she thinks the way she thinks. And what I then found for myself was awareness of language. I understood that every word carries the promise of redemption and destruction at the same time. That every word can open the abyss and unlock the sky. And when you feel that and not just think it, language becomes something completely different. Then you don’t talk like we talk today. And so I understood why she speaks the way she speaks. And why her voice sounds the way it does. Biopics are always difficult because they can easily become wooden. Especially in a film about the 1950s. I always try to find something that makes it come alive.
