The chances of an early phaseout of fossil energy sources are quite high, German climatologists said after studying the dynamics of prices per kilowatt of renewable energy and batteries. This is stated in a recent scientific publication by the Berlin Climate Institute Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC), in which reported about an almost 90% reduction in prices over the past 10 years for both solar energy and its storage devices.

“Some calculations even suggest that all global energy consumption in 2050 could be fully and cost-effectively covered by solar technologies and other renewable energy sources,” says Felix Creutzig, head of the MCC Land Use, Infrastructure and Transport Working Group and lead author of the study.

Scientists clarified that over the past decade, the cost of solar energy has decreased by 87%, and the cost of rechargeable batteries by 85%. According to the study’s authors, such price reductions could make the global energy transition much more viable and cheaper than previously thought. At least such a future is possible, but it will require some effort on the part of politicians and society.

Scientific and technological progress in renewable energy production technologies – an increase in the efficiency of solar cells, an increase in their reliability and a decrease in production costs, as well as the mass production of lithium batteries against the backdrop of their mass production for electric vehicles has led to the fact that “green” energy equipment has become more affordable for the population and companies. This was also facilitated by benefits and subsidies from local authorities.

Together, conditions are being created for a faster reduction in the cost of photo panels and batteries. For example, compared to an analysis two years ago, the forecast for a reduction in the price premium for batteries in 2030 has been reduced from 100% to 28%.

All together allows us to build new models for the global energy transition. These patterns will begin to emerge in the coming years and could open an unexpected and faster path to carbon neutrality built on a renewable energy economy.

“New scenario models, some of which are already beginning to be studied, are likely to demonstrate in the foreseeable future that the global climate transition may not be as expensive as previously thought, and even economical – provided that it is finally addressed,” — the authors of the work published in the journal summarize Energy Research & Social Science.
