UNUSUAL – Hearts, then middle fingers. A futuristic looking digital portal connects New York Yes Dublin from May 8. And not surprisingly, people do anything with it. However, the first idea is very nice: a live stream which runs 24 hours a day, and allows the Irish to interact with the Americans despite the time difference.
The concept, which is nothing new, was created by the Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys. In 2021, he had already annexed Vilnius Lithuania and Lublin in Poland thanks to its ports. These work like a giant FaceTime – but without the sound – making it easier to meet strangers, and meet long-distance couples, as you can see in our video above.
Breaking boundaries is all well and good, but as you can imagine, the main purpose of the portal was quickly debunked. On social media, there are many videos showing people trying to flirt through the screen by passing each other’s cell phone numbers. Others opted for sometimes awkward dance battles, and obviously, a passer-by couldn’t resist the temptation to show his backside to all of New York.
A portal that promotes trolling
Even worse, the Internet user found herself face to face with a pornographic film, which was shown on an Irish phone. An interaction that raises serious problems, because children can pass in front of the gate. A video also shows Irish police arresting a drunken woman who was rubbing herself against the screen, and in TikTok, an Irish man is holding a photo of September 11 on his cell phone.
What this portal reminds us is what psychologist John Suler said “effect of online ban”. This is one of the reasons why we act differently online: we feel anonymous, invisible and therefore … unreachable. We can be more vulnerable, but also more sad and hateful. As for the portal, we are certainly not invisible, but there is no sound, and the person in front of us cannot touch us: it is too annoying to be a troll.
For now, the portal is going to be in place until autumn 2024, and from July it will be connected to other cities in Poland, Brazil and Lithuania. Artistic exhibitions are even planned, and should happen in front CNN. Overwhelmed, Dublin announced it would deploy him “Solution Technologies”, reporting the BBC. Without specifying which ones.
