The popular celebration after Morocco’s historic victory at the World Cup turned into riots in Brussels, in other cities the celebrations remained largely

In the Dutch cities where riots broke out after Morocco’s victory at the World Cup in Qatar, the biggest annoyance has passed. In several places in the country the police had to intervene because the rioters did not respond to calls to leave.

Those calls followed after rioters set off heavy fireworks, which in some cases were hurled at rescue workers or police. In the capital Amsterdam, fireworks were also launched on public transport and people danced on cars. Mercatorplein was evacuated, but calm was restored around 8.30pm after an emergency order was issued. The police have promised to take action against the crimes.

In Rotterdam, the Kruisplein had to be evacuated. It is also still busy on the Hofplein with many party goers. At several points in the city center the traffic is interrupted by revelers. In Schilderswijk in The Hague, police arrested three people in riots. Heavy fireworks were also launched there.
