“I believe that because of my age and with these limitations, I have to spare myself a little to be able to serve the church. Is there an alternative, that you have to think about possible stepping aside.”
On his way back from Nunavut, in northern Canada, the pope told reporters on the plane that he had not thought about resigning, but that “this door is open,” while noting that there was nothing unusual about a pope resigning.
“It’s not strange. It’s not a disaster. The Pope can be replaced,” Francis said.
