The police have new cars. But we don’t want electric cars yet, says Hamáček

“It simply came to our notice then. We managed to negotiate an exception for the vehicles of the safety forces and the integrated rescue system. Unlike other vehicles, these are used in a different operating mode. And the capacity of the current batteries does not allow for a wider deployment, “said Minister of the Interior Jan Hamáček (ČSSD) during the handover of 538 Škoda Auto cars in police colors.

According to him, however, the time when the security forces will switch to a purely electric or hydrogen drive is not such a distant future.

“We know that cars with classic engines will end one day. Progress in increasing battery capacity is already a matter of time. For example, I was assured by Škoda Auto representatives that the capacity of the batteries would soon double and the cars would travel up to a thousand kilometers on a single charge. But it hasn’t happened yet and so for now we will compete as standard. On the other hand, we do not renounce the expansion of the electric car fleet. Several of them already ride in Prague or Ostrava. And we are ready to use them in other larger agglomerations as well, “added the Minister of the Interior. Police took over 38 superbs and 500 kodiaqs on Thursday.

All cars are powered by a 2.0 TSI petrol engine. Superby will focus mainly on highways and kodiaq will mainly traverse the mountains. The Mladá Boleslav carmaker is a long-term supplier of cars for the domestic security forces. Since 1993, more than 20,000 Škoda cars of various models and specifications have been handed over to Czech police officers and the Ministry of the Interior – either specially adapted to the requirements of the police forces or in series production.
