In the first week of this month alone, the Phenicid meteor shower (December 6-7, 2021) and the Puppid-Velid meteor shower (December 7-8, 2021) have also occurred. Also enlivening the stunning night sky view, the peak of the Monocerotid meteor shower will begin today (9/12/2021).

Quoting from the LAPAN Space Science Education page, Monocerotid is a minor meteor shower whose radian point (the origin of the meteor’s appearance) is near the constellation Monoceros which borders Orion and Gemini.

Speaking of Monocerotids, this meteor originates from the dust remnants of the asteroid 2004 TG10 which orbits the Sun with a period of 3.34 years and is also the source of the North Taurid meteor shower.

Andi Pangerang from the LAPAN-BRIN Space Research Center reported that the peak of the Monocerotid meteor shower which occurred on December 9-10 will appear from Sabang to Rote Island.

If you want to see the Monocerotid meteor shower, this can be seen from 19:40 local time until the next day at the end of the sea at dawn (25 minutes before sunset).

The intensity of this meteor shower in Indonesia is quite varied, namely 1.9 – 2 meteors / hour from Sabang to Rote Island. The intensity is influenced by the culminating radian point at an altitude of 71-88 degrees in the north.

However, the intensity of the Monocerotid meteor shower at the zenith (the point in space directly above the observer) is 2 meteors/hour.
