The Power of the Dog, previously the big favorite with no fewer than twelve nominations, was ultimately awarded only once, for best director. Jane Champion is only the third woman to win in this category, after last year’s Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) en in 2010 Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker). In The Power of the Dog Brothers Phil and George Burbank are each other’s biggest opposites. Phil is charismatic but intensely cruel. George is rigid, picky and gentle. Together they are wealthy landowners of the largest ranch in the Montana Valley: a place where men rule, the modernized world is kept at bay and the most powerful cowboy ever, Bronco Henry, is still revered.
